Bauguess Baroque Trumpet Mouthpieces
"I think this is the best balanced baroque mouthpiece I've ever played."
-Haruki Matsuno, Japan
"You have no idea what a difference the new Bauguess mouthpiece has made. Playing feels effortless- and in tune! Thanks again." - Nathan, Memphis, TN
With 40 years of experience playing Principal Trumpet in the major North American period instrument orchestras, Barry Bauguess has developed an exciting new line of Baroque trumpet mouthpieces offered exclusively at The Baroque Trumpet Shop.
Keeping in mind that most Baroque trumpet players play 3- and 4-hole Baroque trumpets as well as modern trumpets, we’ve designed these mouthpieces using comparable popular modern mouthpiece sizes. Although not exact copies of original mouthpieces, we’ve kept the best traditional aspects of original specimens: flat but comfortable rims, traditional cup volumes and shapes, and sharp openings into the throat.
BT Series - Baroque Shank
The BT Series has a traditional Baroque trumpet flat rim. The rim may feel larger or smaller than a modern rim with the same dimensions and are therefore approximately the size of 1C, 3C, etc.
The BT Series produces a traditional Baroque trumpet sound with a crisp attack, solid low register, easy high register, and excellent intonation throughout the entire range.
We designed the BT-1, BT-3, BT-4, and BT-5 to be played with 3- and 4-hole Baroque trumpets, while the BT-2 was designed to be played with natural no-hole trumpets, offering a reasonably sized mouthpiece with good lipping qualities for no-hole playing.
BTS Series - Modern trumpet shank
The BTS Series has a traditional Baroque trumpet flat rim designed with a modern trumpet shank to be played with Baroque trumpets with modern mouthpiece receivers such as BfB and Norwich trumpets. The backbore is a scaled version of the original BT Series and is optimized to be played with Baroque trumpet.
The BTS Series produces a traditional Baroque trumpet sound with a crisp attack, solid low register, easy high register, and excellent intonation throughout the entire range.
BTM Series - Baroque Shank, Modern Rim
The M Series incorporates the playing and sound qualities of the BT series with a modern mouthpiece rim. We know many of you play Baroque trumpet only occasionally or need to play modern and Baroque trumpets on the same program and would feel more comfortable playing a modern rim.
No more modern mouthpiece adapters. The M series eliminates the need to play modern mouthpieces with a mouthpiece adapter. When played on Baroque trumpets, modern mouthpieces tend to sound like…you guessed it…modern mouthpieces. The throat is wrong, the backbore is wrong, and the cup is wrong. The octaves also tend to spread, making the upper register sharp and the low register flat. While the M Series may produce a cleaner, more modern attack than the BT Series, we feel they’re a great compromise for players preferring a modern familiar rim.
NT Series - Natural Trumpet Series
The NT Series is designed exclusively for natural (no-hole) trumpets. Based on various 18th-century models, the NT mouthpieces offer extreme flexibility and aid to getting the 11th and 13th partials in tune. They have a traditional flat, wide rim and a large 5.11mm throat. The NT-2 is available with an 18mm rim and the NT-3 with a 19.5mm rim.
